A number of Hewlett-Packard PCs are getting new cloud options through a partnership with Box today.

Box offers enterprise cloud storage and file sharing services and is partnering with enterprise hardware makers for an easy in to those companies’ customers. The offers include 10 GB of cloud storage plus the option to upgrade, with HP’s Compaq Pro 6005 and 6200 series PCs. With an HP Compaq Elite 8200, Box is offering unlimited storage for a year.

“We’re not the only ones out there that recognize how the cloud will transform the way we work,” read a company blog post. “It’s imperative that Box aligns with other leaders in the industry to enable cloud solutions for today’s knowledge worker.”

HP took a hard turn toward the enterprise market earlier this year with the purchase of Autonomy, an enterprise software company. Since then, the company has experienced a directional upheaval as it changed leadership from former CEO Leo Apotheker to current chief executive Meg Whitman, decided whether or not to keep its WebOS division and considered killing off its PC division altogether. A decision still has not been reached on WebOS, but for now HP PCs are no longer facing the chopping block.

The Box offers are only available when the PCs are purchased through HP’s “Smart Buy” program, available only to small and medium sized businesses. Customers must activate the offer within 60 days of receiving the computer. You can check out further details on the offers here.

HP is preparing another fire sale for its HP TouchPad tablets just in time for the holidays. The limited time sale will begin at 6:00PM Central time on Sunday, December 11, and is only available through HP’s eBay store. Both the 16GB and 32GB models will be available, but quantities are limited.

Also, this time around, the tablets offered will be refurbished models and there is a limit of two per customer. Sales are final and there is only a 90-day warranty. The 16GB model will be priced at $99 while the 32GB model will be priced at $149. An additional 3-piece accessory bundle will also be offered that includes a case, charging dock, and wireless keyboard for $79.

The HP TouchPad sports a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 10-inch 1024 x 768 pixel resolution display. It comes running the now defunct webOS 3.0 platfom, but some folks have managed to port Android to the device. Lenovo has launched a trio of new tablets, including a 5-inch LePad/IdeaTab S2005 tablet/phone hybrid, and 7-inch and 10.1-inch slates to sate your browsing the multimedia needs. The LePad S2007 and S2010 will hit China in December, Engadget Chinese reports, running a 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 1280 x 800 IPS display; however, Lenovo also apparently has a separate Tegra 3 tablet, the IdeaTab K2 leaked earlier this month, for the international market.

Chinese buyers will get an 8-megapixel main camera and 1.3-megapixel front camera on the S2007 and S2010, along with integrated 3G with support for China Telecom’s EV-DO plus China Unicom’s WCDMA. The 3,780 mAh battery in the 360g and 9.7mm thick S2007 is good for up to eight hours of WiFi use, Lenovo reckons, while the 9.9mm thick and 670g S2010 has a 7,670 mAh pack that can run for up to eleven hours.

As for the LePad S2005 – which will launch as the IdeaTab outside of China – that has a 5-inch 800 x 480 LTPS display with 178-degree viewing angles, and runs Android 2.3.5 on a 1.2GHz Qualcomm dual-core paired with 1GB of RAM and an HDMI port. There’s also a 5-megapixel main camera – with 1080p HD video recording support – and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. Connectivity includes microUSB and HSPA+, squeezed into a 9.95mm thick, 198g chassis.

Pricing for the three slates is yet to be confirmed, though we must admit that we’re not particularly feeling the WVGA display on the S2005. Considering Samsung manages to outfit its 5.3-inch Galaxy Note with a 1280 x 800 display, Lenovo’s refusal to look even to qHD seems short-sighted.

Lenovo is planning to release a new version of its 13-inch ThinkPad X1 notebook that will be able to dual-boot Windows 7 or a special instant-on operating system, which could be Android, Splashtop, or some other operating system entirely. Plans for the new notebook, which will be called the ThinkPad X1 Hybrid, were revealed from a leaked PDF slideshow that was intended for only Lenovo’s channel partners.

The ThinkPad X1 Hybrid is expected to offer up to 10 hours of battery life for surfing the web and about 8 hours of battery life when it comes to watching videos. This is a big improvement from the slightly over 4 hours you get with the current ThinkPad X1. The ThinkPad X1 Hybrid is expected to arrive sometime this month.

Additionally, the PDF revealed that Lenovo is planning to release super thin ThinkPad Ultrabooks by mid-2012 right around the time Intel will be releasing its next-gen Ivy Bridge chips. Lenovo will also be launching an 11.6-inch ThinkPad X130e as a sequel to its X120e notebook next month.

Not so hip on the ThinkPad X1′s short battery life? Lenovo doesn’t seem too thrilled about it either, and are prepping to launch a new twist on the X1 sporting a battery efficient “Instant Media Mode” sometime this month. A recent Lenovo Live update dubs the refresh the “ThinkPad X1 Hybrid, and shows the rig rocking the same media interface as the IdeaPad K1. The Hybrid promises Windows 7 / Media Mode switching, instant-on convenience and enough juice to get you through eight hours of video playback or up to 10 hours of web browsing. The document also details plans to release 13 and 14-inch Ultrabooks in May starting at $1300 and $800, respectively, as well as the ThinkPad x130e — an apparent successor to the X120e, ruggedized and due in December. A few days ago we reported that Lenovo had plans to launch a 10.1” NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core tablet (dubbed the Lenovo LePad K2) and its specifications were a bit of a mystery back then, but thanks to a recent benchmark test that Lenovo conducted on GL Benchmarks, more details surrounding the device has surfaced.

We know that the tablet will feature NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor, and with its quad-core ARM based processor and improved graphics core, the Tegra-3 processor proved to be 2.6 times faster than NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor. However oddly enough it seemed to lag behind on Apple’s iPad 2.

One would expect a new chip to be faster, especially when NVIDIA has announced that Tegra 3 drivers have been relatively polished by its team. But let’s be cautious and wait for the actual product release.

Panasonic has revealed its latest point-and-shoot, the LUMIX DMC-3D1, and as the name suggests it’s packing a pair of sensors for 3D still and video photography. The DMC-3D1 has two 12-megapixel sensors with 25mm ultra-wide angle lenses with 4x optical zoom, and as well as shooting 8-megapixel 3D stills or 1920 x 1080 60i 3D video, can also shoot 12-megapixel stills and 1920x1080i full HD 2D videos simultaneously, each sensor being used independently.

That potentially makes the new LUMIX interesting even to those who aren’t really bothered by 3D stills or video. We’ve seen other cameras and camcorders capable of snapping still shots while video recording is taking place, but the still images are generally lower resolution than normal and are reliant on the same zoom/focus/exposure/etc settings of the video recording. By fitting two completely separate sensors, however, Panasonic has made it possible for independent settings for photo and video.

A dedicated 2D/3D switch on the back toggles between the modes, and there’s Panasonic’s quad-CPU Venus Engine for intelligent noise reduction and other post-processing. Panasonic expects the LUMIX DMC-3D1 to go on sale in December, priced at $499.99.

Fans of smartphones in Japan have been able to get devices with the Panasonic logo on them for a while now and the company has sold mobiles in the country for many years. Panasonic has only offered its mobile phone wares inside Japan since 2005. It looks like Panasonic is now set to push those smartphones out to other countries including Europe. I would expect that if Panasonic hits Europe it would come to the US as well.

Europe and the US are two of the most prolific smartphone using areas in the world. According to reports, Panasonic is seeking a European PR agency to handle the launching of its smartphone Southside of Japan. There is no official comment from Panasonic on the move. The phones are said to be Android offerings.

Panasonic is also reported to be looking at launching the devices next year. Panasonic has only been in the smartphone business in Japan a while now. It has offered devices like the P-07A back in 2009.

Product Review: The LG Over-the-Range Microwave

The Perfect companion for LG Electric Range

Oprah Winfrey’s ‘Favorite Things 2007′ put LG appliances in the spotlight, when she featured the LG HDTV Refrigerator on her annual holiday special. Most Americans associated LG with high end electronics and some may be as skeptical as I was about LG’s ability to produce quality kitchen appliances. This is not a new endeavor for LG, however. LG was originally established in 1958 under the name GoldStar.

If you’ve read my review on the new LG Side-by-Side Refrigerator or the LG Electric Range, then you already know; LG can produce quality appliances. The LG Over-the-Range Microwave is no different. The stainless steel LG Over-the-Range Microwave (Model: LMV1630ST) retails for $269.99 and mirrors the contemporary styling of the LG Electric Range.

Like most over-the-range microwaves, the LG has a kitchen timer, exhaust fan and a cooktop/night light. The exhaust fan did a pretty good job of diffusing the smoke from a grease splattered oven (more about that episode, in my LG Electric Range review), but the 30 watt cooktop/night light, does a better job as a nightlight than actually illuminating the cook top-typical of most over-the-range microwaves.

The beauty of this microwave is its versatility. It’s the most comprehensive microwave I have ever used. To maximize these capabilities; however, you really need to peruse the owner’s manual first. There is a little cheat sheet on the inside of the door, but it won’t make much sense unless you’ve looked through the manual first.

Quick and Easy

The EZ-ON button adds time in 30 second increments, while the Auto Touch has preprogrammed buttons that make it easy to reheat meals, pop popcorn, and heat water. The Kids Meal buttons are preprogrammed to heat hot dogs, soup, oat meal and baby food. With the cook time button and power level settings, you can adjust both to your requirements, but it is certainly worth checking out the owner’s manual before you start because the LG Over-the-Range Microwave has some fabulous features.

Neat Features

The LG Over-the-Range Microwave has a one touch Quick Defrost and a customizable Auto Defrost that adjusts for meat, poultry or fish. I personally love the Soften and Melt features. These preprogrammed buttons allow you to evenly soften cream cheese and ice cream without melting it, or melt chocolate and butter evenly without it splattering all over the microwave. I use these features a lot when cooking and baking because I know I can hit the preset button and turn my attention to something else.

According to the owner’s manual, the Hold Warm feature will keep pastry or a plate of food warm for up to 99 minutes and 99 seconds. Honestly, I haven’t really had a use for this yet. I’m sure it would come in handy if you wanted to keep a pie warm while serving dinner or perhaps puff pastries during a morning brunch.

Good Buy for the Money

Although, I wasn’t as impressed with the LG Over-the-Range Microwave as I was with the LG Electric Range, its functionality does surpass the other Over-the-Range Microwaves I’ve used. Really, what else can you expect a microwave to do-well, besides look good-which the LG does? When you buy it in combination with the new LG Electric Range, retailers will often give you a discount on both appliances. Ask a lot of questions when you’re shopping.

Green energy is a hot topic when it comes to renewable energy and of all the different methods to produce renewable energy geothermal is probably the least well known but the Geothermal Energy Association is looking to change that when in brings together 160 global businesses involved in the industry.

Billed as the Geothermal Energy Expo the convention is being held in San Diego and will provide a unique opportunity for companies to exhibit their projects, equipment, services as well as sharing the state of the art technology as it applies to the geothermal community.

Companies expected to take part include: Siemens, POWER Engineers, Ormat, NALCO, Geothermal Resource Group, Mitsubishi Power Systems and more.

“As our industry continues to proliferate among global markets, more advancements are being made.  The GEA Geothermal Energy Expo will highlight these new and important technical advancements, providing a robust forum for industry buyers and sellers,” said GEA Executive Director Karl Gawell. “We look forward to welcoming geothermal business leaders and exhibitors from around the world for a very hands on, dynamic event.”

As it stands right now geothermal power supplies approximately 10,715 Megawatts of electricity in 24 countries but the potential for the use of geothermal resources is much more than that. It is believed that with our current technology, and technology in development, that geothermal resources could supply more than 300,000 Megawatts of power and with fewer carbon emissions.

The expo is expected to draw over 3,000 attendees during October 24 and October 26.

Ever heard of DragonWave before? I haven’t, but here they are making headlines as they seem to be in the running to purchase the microwave transport business from Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) in due time – including the latter’s associated operational support systems and related support functions. This particular move would mena DragonWave will end up as a strategic supplier of packet microwave and related products to Nokia Siemens Networks, and both companies claim that they will “jointly coordinate technology development activities”.

It is the hope for DragonWave as well as NSN to roll out the next generation of backhaul products, which are able to support microwave solutions for mobile operators all over the world. Rumor has it that DragonWave will fork out 10 million euros in cash, in addition to 5 million euros worth of DragonWave common shares, where this acquisition is tipped to end in early 2012.

I have been reviewing televisions for quite some time. Throughout this time I have seen some of the most amazing products, and I have also seen some that don’t even deserve a second glance. Apple has won a preliminary sales injunction against Samsung in Australia, blocking the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from hitting store shelves and leaving the Korean company to face either a 2012 trial or scrapping the slate altogether. The federal court judge decided in favor of Apple’s claims that Samsung infringed on two patents the company holds, SMH reports, concluding “there were several factors that favoured Apple.”

Samsung had previously told the court that, even though the threatened injunction was only a temporary one until a full trial could be held, the time delays involved in that would leave it no choice but to axe the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. In missing the holiday sales season, Samsung argued, the Android slate would be “dead” on arrival. The company’s official statement makes no mention of those intentions, though does insist that the Korean firm will continue to pursue a separate claim against Apple in which Samsung alleges infringement around wireless standard patents.

“Samsung will continue its legal proceeding against Apple’s claim in order to ensure our innovative products remain available to consumers. This is a part of our ongoing legal proceeding against Apple’s claim. Both firms will return to the Australian courts on Friday, Bloomberg reports, with the judge ruling on whether Samsung can release a modified version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that avoids the patents Apple complained about. Samsung had previously offered Apple a potential deal, promising a swifter trial on the wireless standard patents if Apple agreed to drop its demands for a ban; however the Cupertino firm declined.

Tensions between the two companies escalated earlier this week, when Samsung launched a pop-up store offering the Galaxy S II for just $2 meters away from the Sydney Apple Store.
